a hoax or not, those terror-indulging cultures are spreading their own hot mess all over the world now.

Bomb threat made against New York City schools, beli

A New York City school superintendent has received a threatening email that is identical to the one in Los Angeles, but New York police believe the threat is a hoax. (more)

"We have an investigation underway, but it's an investigation into a hoax," said NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton. "We strongly believe that the email that was received in New York City was similar, almost exactly the same as received in other localities, specifically Los Angeles, that we do not see that as a credible terrorist threat and we are investigating that as a hoax."

Bratton, who assured the public that authorities believe there is no threat to New York City schools, said the Los Angeles Unified School District overreacted by closing hundreds of schools because of the email. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio added that the email was "so outrageous" that authorities never considered closing schools.

The NYPD said it was working with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the LAPD to investigate the source of the threat.

Media needs to stop covering these shootings, its only making things worse. RIP to those who have lost a loved one but telling the world about it is not helping the situation.

As usual, the NYC DOE plays Russian Roulette with the lives of students and teachers. LA did the right thing and erred on the side of caution. IF this was the 10th or 100th email threat then one might say they overreacted. In light of recent events, LA made the right decision.
If the threat had been made against City Hall, Tweed, or PP1, you better believe their fat butts would have been hauled out of their immediately.
Oh, and Bratton should shut his big mouth. No one asked his idiot opinion.

No, New York made the right decision. The DOE gets hundreds of these emails a year, and they collaborate with anti-terrorism TRAINED NYPD and FBI, who've determined these emails to be a hoax. The ONLY reason we're hearing about this particular email is because LA overreacted. For all their faults, if the NYPD believes the email to be hoax, I'm going to trust them a lot more then I would trust anyone in LA. You can't seriously tell me that the LA super-intendant is more qualified to determine whether or not this email was a credible threat than the NYPD. People need to stop living in fear, which is what terrorist want. STOP LETTING THEM WIN.

The LA "super-intendant" was the NYC Chancellor in the 90's. The yabos in the NYPD couldn't do squat to stop the WTC bombings in 1993 or 2001. They wouldn't be able to do anything now either.

LA schools just suffered a tragedy a couple of weeks ago. They did the WISE thing instead of the IGNORANT MACHO thing.

The media's entire job is to cover current events and the news. It doesn't have to be good news; they have a job to do.

There are countries like China and NK where the government has specific control over what the media should report and what not. Citizens like livingsinglenyc has a natural fit with that kind of governance.

I'm torn, though certainly am leaning more in your direction, especially given recent events. I thought it especially laughable that the police commissioner and mayor stated one reason why they knew it was a hoax was because the "a" at the beginning of "allah" wasn't capitalized. I seriously doubt that the terrorists are particularly concerned about proper spelling/grammar/punctuation/etc. I'm no anti-terror expert, but I'd think that it wouldn't be outside of the realm of possibility (or even probability) that the terrorists would make a threat look like a hoax before executing their plans; that way, they would increase the chance of getting a response like the one here where the threat wasn't taken seriously, thereby increasing the number of casualties. That said, we can't close down schools and cease to properly function at the sound of every threat, so I'm not too upset about how NYC responded.

I saw the ridiculous spelling "fact" also.

As a teacher, I can tell you they made no effort to notify us. Principals received some email in the afternoon. Some effort could have been made to quietly notify teachers and/or schools could have been delayed for one or two hours to check buildings.

Instead we have a mayor and police chief doing their macho posturing and making fun of LA for making a hard call.

The NYPD does have the technology to stop such a thing, but other than that I agree with you.
