1. Growing population. Obviously more people means buses will stop more, and also be more overcrowded, and thus, have to travel slower.
2. Lower Speed Limits. Speed limits went down to a turtle like 25mph. Cars move slower, buses move slower.
I honestly feel bad for people that have to rely on local buses to commute. Walking is even faster half the time.
A variety of traffic calming devices and road dieting implemented by DOT over the past decade have done nothing but slow down traffic. Concrete barriers, medians, pylons, bike lanes, slow zones, pedestrian plazas and large planters have all slowed down the speed of travel significantly.

Saw coverage of this report elsewhere some time ago and it isn't much to do with increased ridership and you may think.
Large problem is traffic in many parts of NYC and especially Manhattan quite frankly *stinks*.
Between construction, double parked vehicles, bike lanes, those darned plazas, etc.. all piled onto increased traffic buses simply cannot make good time.
Long story short congestion is bad and getting worse.

Agreed. I always like look at older pictures of NYC that were taken maybe 15-20 years ago and one thing that always strikes me more then anything is the lack of congestion compared to today. Even where I live it's a mess sometimes.

When you compress traffic from four lanes down to two or three (addition of bike lanes and or those GD plazas) there is bound to be some consequences and repercussions.
To this add legions of apparently clueless pedestrians who seem to believe it is their God given right to cross into the street where ever and when ever they please.
Joke to friends all the time that one day am going to take one of these failed Darwin experiments *OUT*. I might get two to four, but they'll still be dead. *LOL*
Why not just walk instead? Why even bother with the buses?
