Bottom line is I'm a strong candidate for a very interesting civil service job in Manhattan with mediocre pay ($50-55k/year),
You will be very happy in that job during the next economic meltdown when all your peers in higher paying private jobs are filing for Unemployment. Also an "interesting job" is a rare commodity in this day and age.

Exactly, I am old enough to know that stable employment is far better than a higher paying job in the private sector.
^agreeance with all said above. Trust me, you can live fine making 50K in nyc. You just will not be able to party it up at all without going into debt. Take this advice from a loser who has done such a thing and whines about it incessantly :/
Translation, those of you who shriek in horror at the thought of someone earning 50k do so because that means that person might have to live in a neighborhood with a lot of Black or Hispanic people.
None of you really know what the OP's tolerance is, what commutes he has done in the past, etc. You're just projecting your personal biases on to the matter.
Many New Yorkers commute much further away from lily white suburbs, so if they can stand to do that he can stand the commute from the outer boroughs or upper Manhattan. Also keep in mind city government jobs can be found throughout the city, so if he gets the job he could potentially work in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx. Stop with your ridiculous *****umptions.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Just because they don't want to live in a majority minority neighborhood, or a noisy neighborhood doesn't mean OP would have an issue.
Then again some of the cheapest neighborhoods are white majority, like in the North Bronx or Staten Island.
Don't know what so many of y'all are getting all hot about. The median wage for a whole lot of jobs in NYC is at or barely above $50k, and obviously people manage.
As for NYC's civil servants, there is a reason so many of these affordable lotteries have municipal worker preference slots. It is the same reason NYCHA and even Section 8 housing have a good number of civil servants.

But those white neighborhoods don't have the coolest clubs! Please what fool does to the coolest clubs or bases their life around that? Keep going out like that and you'll lose your home in your trendy neighborhood (too drunk or stoned to go to work).
The stuff you have in downtown Manhattan is not the stuff a normal person does that often ,and I'm including going to the museum and other cultural institutions. It's nice to see once or twice, but most of us then get over it.
