Last time we had a "for sure this time" december opening (7 train hudson yards) it was another 9 months before they actually opened. So if we're talking 9 months per station, 2 and a half years sounds like about what the MTA is competent to deliver with the three SAS stops

Why would I care either way?
The Second Avenue Subway opens when it opens. If it opens at the end of this year, fine. If it opens next year, fine too.
But currently they are stating Dec. 31st of THIS year. We'll see, but it's not on the top 10 priorities or concerns of my life.
To be clear, I don't expect them to meet the deadline, but I feel like it may not be that late. The whole point of bringing the W back was to replace the Q in Queens and send it up to 2nd avenue. So do you think they would've brought the W back if they were really that far away?

...or am I being too optimistic?
I think you're spot on. Recently it was announced that construction work will take place 24/7 so I guess they're trying to protect what little of a reputation they have left lol.

Sometimes I like to remind myself that when the R train tunnels were damaged after Sandy and had to be closed down, they actually reopened a few months earlier than planned!

I will let your optimism be my guiding light, TOG. I am SO sick of climbing Mount Lexington to get to the #6 train.
I am going with the New Years eve, Dec. 31, 2016 opening but I will skip the first day because it is too much of a bulls eye for some crazed doofus with a pressure cooker. Besides for me New Years Eve is always just champagne in front of the TV with the person I love.
But who knows, maybe an invite to Trump Tower this year. I can be the token Marxist.
