Generally speaking, if you're building bigger buildings, it means your going to be putting more people in them. More people = more spending, more tax revenue, etc..

But more than that by bringing in more students, a certain, and not small, percentage will stay after they graduate. Now these will be well educated, well credentialed, and likely high earners. Many will start new business, or grow existing business in the city.

I "learned" something earlier today.

Until this morning I was under the impression that this new catch-word - "antifa" - was derogatory and meant "anti-first amendment".

This morning I was informed of the real meaning.

I quickly went back to believing it means what I originally suspected.

Apparently the far-right seem to think that fascism is when the masses silence a someone or disrupt someone voicing oppressive views. That is not fascism. Fascism is state-sponsored, xenophobic, sexist, nationalistic, militaristic, merger between corporations and the state. That is the ACTUAL definition of fascism. The left is using it to describe Trump because he embodies the ACTUAL definition. The right then goes "no your fascist for not letting us speak"

When someone or a group of people shut you down peacefully or violently, it is because they feel what you are saying makes you an *******. That has nothing to do with fascism. That has to deal with the real consequences of the stupid shiit you say. You can't just walk around calling Mexicans rapists and not expect a Mexican to punch you in the face. These right-wingers are so deluded they want to be "protected" in saying all kinds of nasty hateful shiit.

Also free speech is a matter of state repression. That is when free speech is an issue. Like when the NYPD en mass arrests activists who haven't done anything, and charges them with traffic violations, disorderly conduct etc...

When a group of people shut down an individual or another group of people that is just two groups exercising their free speech at the same time.

Now on the topic of "delegitmizing" the movement. It doesn't. It just makes you mad because your a trump supporter. What do you expect people to do just sit on their hands and let you spew racist sexist shiit? That is by definition what a protest is. It is a DISRUPTION. A protest that is not disruptive is not a protest, it is a parade or a gathering, but not a protest.

I'm not a Trump supporter and I was vocal on this board about that during the election.

However, these protests are very hypocritical. It's been a few weeks and all of a sudden everything has changed? For the most part it's same country as it was under Obama.

Where were the mass protests then? This is selective outrage. If they want change, they should get involved on the local level.

This will put private colleges/universities back into the education business and not the $$$ making business.

Many of these students attend NYU: federal financial aid supports approximately 57% of our undergraduate student body, while New York State aid programs support NYU undergraduate students through more than $13 million in direct financial assistance.

The federal financial aid going to NYU is mostly student loans, and student loans are already serviced by private companies. Of course there are private student loans, and Trump will have all student loans originate at banks. So basically only people with either lots of money or good credit will be attending private colleges, and those with big names will have no problem attracting enough wealthy people. If you think private colleges/universities are ever going to leave the $$$$ making business, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

Good points. Gavin is free to say what he wants. And NYU students are free to say they don't want them there.

Free speech means you can't be persecuted by the government for taking whatever political stance.

But beyond that, do we have free speech? No. A man who tells his wife he's going out to the ***** house is getting served with divorce papers and paying out a lot of money. Someone who calls his boss an idiot is getting fired. Being nasty to someone in the streets can get you punched. And so on.

If you don't want people to come after you, don't say nasty **** and don't be mean.
