midtown is the worst possible place in all of Manhattan.
the only people who are gonna like that area are tourists.
SoHo, West Village, etc. are far more enjoyable for locals.
Lots of real NYers & transplant NYers live in Midtown West and Midtown East. There is some bars & chill places to drink/eat in Hell's Kitchen, Turtle Bay, Murray Hill, etc to name a few. I use to live in Midtown East and it was awesome walking to work daily.

Spend a lot of time in Midtown East. Find it rather dead on weekends, but am in agreement. Seems to be a little community there. Some decent restaurants too. Nevertheless, could not see myself living there.
I work in the old Times Annex. Midtown sucks, between the tourists, the tourist bus hustlers (they need to limit the number of those bozos on one corner), the beggars, the smokers (way more in midtown than Chelsea) and just the people in general. And that's without going into Times Square proper, which I recommend nobody do. It's vital, but so is the inlet of a slaughterhouse.
.... the smokers (way more in midtown than Chelsea)......
The diamond district....47th bet. 5th and 6th ave....holy sh#t.....ban that whole block from smoking!!!
