Hello! The wife and I are coming to NYC January 15-18. We are looking for a few things. We are in our mid 20s.

1. Where is the best place/area to get a hotel that is affordable for that time (100-120 a night) near the city? We can stay on the jersey side if we need, with good views of the city preferably, if staying in jersey. We would like a safe area if we are out at night.

2. What types of things are there to do during that time? I know it's a weird time to go being in the middle of winter. We would like to do touristy things (for her) and get good views of the city and do city type things like Times Square and that sort. Do they do tours of the city around then? I know they do boat tours in the summer. We aren't into theatres and that kind of stuff.

Thanks!

Am thinking they do bus tours year-round. $100-120 a night is tough. May have to up your budget a bit. Am not even sure if that's enough for NJ.

Try the Pelham Gardens Motel in the Bronx. It is a great romantic hot-sheet motel in the Bronx. They're prices are $50 for a four hour window and $100 a night. They clean the sheets after every guest. Also very romantic for you and the wife. Rooms are lit with red lights like if you were to go to a red light district

Who is going all the way up to the Bronx to endure a long subway ride?

Definitely second using airbnb if that's your budget. Find a few places with decent subway transit and then come back to this forum and list some of what you're leaning towards and the people on this board can tell which ones are the better picks.

I suggest Jersey City for a hotel. It's a short cheap train ride (like 2 stops) and too many hotels/motels in NYC house homeless and don't advertise it, so you have no idea what you might be in for. Also, it stops in the financial district near the 9/11 museum, the NY stock exchange, not far from ferry to statue of liberty, Chinatown, and the Brooklyn Bridge. You can walk over the bridge if you don't mind freezing, or just halfway to catch a breeze (no kidding, bundle up) and the scenery and come back.

If you can ice skate, do it in Rockefeller Center. The tree might still be up and while it's a fortune, so is everything else and it would be a good once in a lifetime NYC experience.
