Bro check out some of the beautiful small towns NY has. Saranac Lake is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. I may move there when I retire.

Are we the only state with a Thruway? I-87 North is a tough ride tho, tough meaning beautiful. From Yankee Stadium north, with no traffic through Westchester, one of the most scenic rides on the planet, believe it!

Thats why people go googoo gaagga over NYC, and New York state, cant beat them views!
87 is visually pretty dull. Try route 9 in westchester or 9w in rockland

I really like the Kingston/Woodstock area, the winters must be terrible though.

I do like upstate New York, it's nice to be there for a change of pace. It's absolutely beautiful too, especially in the summer.
A lot of people from downstate go to upstate. I lived for 4 years in Ithaca when I did my undergraduate work at Cornell. A lot of downstate people go to all the colleges upstate, Cornell, Syracuse, Ithaca College, the SUNYs, etc.

If you're into hunting or boating a lot of people downstate go upstate too. I've even been to medieval festivals in the Hudson Valley.

Also a lot of people from the city have visited friends and relatives in college upstate, or who moved upstate.

It's not like someone's can go to the finger lakes or Western NY right after work (it's far enough that people aren't going to generally go on a weekly basis).

Well in any state it's going to be majority rules. The majority of the population lives downstate.
