I think the city granting so many TLC plates to Uber/Lyft drivers is defeating the whole purpose of taxi medallions. The reason the city sold limited medallions was to prevent traffic gridlocks by limiting the amount of taxis standing around.
But today, there are Uber/Lyft drivers parked everywhere and many driving around purposely since Uber pays extra bonus for being available in certain areas.
But the other serious question is who is that dumb to be driving for a car service that pays below minimum wage in some cases while pushing for car leases with expensive opt out clauses. All those folks foolishly signed up for leases didn't realize that if you don't drive enough or you decide to opt out the fee will strap you to driving for Uber.
Uber also pays very little, drivers averages about $3-6 per customer after fees for most Uber drivers and that's not even factoring income taxes you have to report and pay.
In the video, the guy drove for 63 hours but made only $351.16 before taxes after Uber fees.
Something has to be done, if for nothing else the streets of Manhattan alone below 125th street is becoming the wild, wild, west.
Just drove home today and am here to tell you between the Lyft/Uber and whatever drivers, taxis, Amazon and other contract delivery persons things are bad, very bad on the road.
The taxis aren't really a huge of an issue; it is the GD Uber and Amazon/contract delivery drivers who cause large parts of the problem. They don't know where the **&ES* they are going most of the time. This means kerb crawling as they drive with one eye on that GPS or whatever screen, and other on the road. Both contract drivers and ride share double park/stand where they shouldn't, stop in middle of street.....
Contract delivery guy Monday night stops (and parks) in middle of East 81st street while he ran to deliver a package. I mean really.
As for the bulk of OP post, the City Council is a day late and dollar short in attempts to "save" the taxi industry. Ride share apps are killing traditional taxi service and that popularity is only going to grow. Outside of taking steps like London (banning), don't see anything that will change.
Young or whatever people in our building use Uber or whatever all the time. This when they could walk less than one quarter block down and hail a taxi, and or wait for one in front of building.
Don't touch uber/lyft/via, they are the future. Yellow taxis are the stone age, do NOT bail out these medallion idiots who blew $500,000 on their license with borrowed money and now look like total idiots

SCREW THE SMELLY YELLOWS. ARROGANT MOFOS use to control the market for years. NOT ANYMORE SUCKAS
I agree. Screw the yellow taxi. Yellow taxi discrimination against blacks is well-documented/known. No, this wasn't everyone, but it was enough people to make services like Uber/Lyft a godsend.

Here's the thing though. Watched the latest meeting with Ydanis Rodriguez on TV the other day. The city is regulating yellow taxi cabs, but NOT regulating how many Uber/Lyft cars and so so on run around the streets causing *tons* of gridlock and unnecessary congestion. If anything the same rules that apply to yellow cabs must apply to other companies. Those Uber drivers and the like will park anywhere and tie up traffic for a fare. Situation is *out of control*.

Am in agreement (partially). Can see what I wrote above.

well that's not hard to crack down on, you put a huge dragnet on standing TLC vehicles with heavy fines. After two convictions it's a 20 day license suspension, after three it's 60 days, four and you're out for a year
