So I went on a housing lottery interview today (I don't want to say which one as I do not want to jinx myself after all these bad experiences. Anyway, they asked, "Do you have any family in any of the five boroughs?" I answered yes, and it seemed that it wasn't a good answer or perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

Why would they even care? Does anyone know? More importantly, will that go for or against my application?

That is so weird! I can't even speculate why they would ask that. It doesn't even seem to be information they are entitled to elicit!

And then you got the feeling that what you said wasn't the answer they were looking for?

Very strange!

I think they're speculating as to whether you might be bringing some additional family member into the apt. I haven't been asked that question, but at one interview the agent emphasized many times, at separate intervals, that my parents could not move in with me (as if, how weird as that?). When I said my parents were no longer living, that seemed to be the "right" answer. I'm just guessing here.

Yeah. I felt as if I were at a job interview and gave the wrong answer. Hopefully someone else would provide some answers. It's unfair as I've lived alone for 10 years now and my family member has their own retirement checks and a great apartment in Manhattan! Better than the one I'm getting- that's for sure!

Thst crossed my mind too, but I thought it was unlikely because stormgal was asked about family in the five boroughs. She theoretically could have family living in New Jersey or Westchester, etc., who want to move in.

Maybe the marekting agent was just trying to make friendly conversation. We've become like the old Kremlinologists, trying to read something big into the tiniest detail. But then I think the faux friendliness is a way to trap you, getting you to say too much. Again, who knows?

I wish it was friendly conversation, but they were checking off questions from a list!

IDK, I wouldn't think too much about it - I really don't see why it matters though. We all [most likely] have families in the 5 boroughs LOL

So, would the denial letter read, "Has family within the five boroughs"?

Unless that is a valid reason, and of course it is NOT, the marketing company shouldn't allow its agents to ask the question.
