"Too long" isn't an issue if service is fast and frequent -- which is a matter of the mechanical signals, not the length of the route.

Also during the ~8:30 opening (which I've experienced a few times when late)...and a ~7:30 p.m. opening every night (again, when I'm late)...I get the feeling it probably takes some time for someone to get to the bridge, then a while to fully open it, and they'll want to have it open a while before the ship's there, and the ship's moving fairly slowly all along...then reverse it all and I guess that's why the whole thing takes like twenty minutes.

Also, as a general note from Far Rockaway, some other options are the QM17 express bus, as well as the Q113 bus to Jamaica for the E/J/Z, and the LIRR.
