The job sucks your first year or 2. Dont let anyone tell you different. Its gets better though. I could have quit and went back to my old job but didn't. You will have no life, wont be able to make plans and wont even know your shift til the day before. Give it some time and its gets good . If you have kids ,family etc it's especially hard. I'm thankful for the job and proud of it. There are bad days and good days. Like any job gotta take good with the bad, it's worth it in long run 100%

Everyone’s experience is different... when I came on, I was hired in sept... there wS a November and December class... I ended up with 16 guys beat in my garage of 70 guys... which was enough to keep me days. I also was from a ez pack garage so we had a lot of tissue guys.... my section happened to have a lot of tissue guys... so 2 months after being hired, I was days making the section like 3-4 days a week, and in recycling the rest... I was very lucky.

And even if u do end up having a ****ty first few years... I can’t see many opportunities that would be a better decision than this job, for the vast majority of people.

Anyone who cries about how horrible this job is would never make it in the private industry in any job above a minimum wage retail gig.

San man vs train conductor for Metro North, thoughts? Also is it true you don't make much OT unless there is snow? $36k salary would be rough if we get no OT.

Theres some OT , each garage is different . But you're not making 36k your first year. My first year i made over 50k with minimal OT, could have made more but didnt work many charts or sundays. I'm pretty sure DSNY pension is better but not sure. What's salary for train conductor?

All depends on what garage you are in. I have 3 kids a wife and mortgage and I’m not bouncing around or crying broke. I make the truck everyday with 11 guys beat. The 11th guy makes the truck 2 times a week. My old garage was different. Senior men cry about old ways and new guys are scared of everything. Just do ya job. The money is there and it’s a easy days work.

Anyone have thoughts on FDNY vs DSNY? I have my FP on June 26th for DSNY and have my physical test for FDNY on the 25th. Based on my FDNY list number I’d get on in about 1.5 years. Just trying to think if I should just follow through with DSNY and do away with FDNY.

Take both and see where you're at in 1.5 years. If u hate the job then take FDNY. Also, once you're off probation of dsny , u can leave for another city agency and you have a year to come back. For example, if you're hired July 2019. you'll be off probation January 2021. If u switch to FD after this date, you can do a year with FDNY and decide if you want to stay or not. You're seniority and place in garage will be held for you for a year so if u do return u go right back to where u left off. Pursue both and then make that decision. Either way, there is no wrong choice. There was a guy in my garage who turned down FD last minute because he like dsny more than he thought he would.

Why wouldnt you start your city time with DSNY if FD is over a year away? Also once you are off probation you can leave dsny and have a year to come back if you dont like FD.
