I left Staten Island when I was 18 years old back in early 2001 and I don't ever plan on going back. I lived here in Florida now for nearly 8 years now and the racism is far less in the south than the north. Staten Island used to be nice, but all the people from Brooklyn and Queens messed it up. Is gonna take some outsiders from other parts of the country to change the place if that happens. Esp. changing the South Shore.
Besides last I heard, the island has been slowing changing since 2001. A Koels and Lowes in Manors Harbor. Home Depot in Park Hill of all places.
Florida is nice (you dont make as much money, but housing is cheaper). Your body adjusts to the Florida Heat. Now if its like 50 degrees outside its cold to me.
Heck my sister is moving away from there soon going from SI to Queens (which is a first I heard of). For those who want to move away from the rotten island, Florida is a good place (mostly the Orlando area).

I moved from Sausalito, CA (look it up) to the city and then I decided to buy a house on SI after checking out CT and Westchester. I found this house on a Hill with this fab view of the city! LOL, SI is bad in terms of the locals....they are so different then what I am used too, but I thought funny that the OP mentioned the home depot on Park Hill...because I know my neighborhood is crazy with renovations!!!! I don't live in Park Hill...just another ____ Hill. My block has many transplants from outside of SI...yes, it will take pple like me that see that location of SI is the "perfect suburb to the city".

You are probably moving out of Staten Island, simply because you cannot afford to live here. SI people have one of the highest incomes of all the other boroughs. We like it the way it is. If it is discovered by people like you, we will be in trouble. And if you lived here, you were probably living in one of the few gheto areas we have. And Orlando? Give me a break! There are some good people on Staten Island. However, most seem to be materialistic fools, and you seem to fit that category. Get off your high horse with your ability to afford Staten Island. All you need is $500k to get one of those cookie cutter semi attached homes. Maybe you need to make yourself feel better because you cant afford your current size home in your native Brooklyn.

Most people in this country are materialistic to a certain extent. It is the land of conspicuous compsumtion. Most of those threads were bashing the good people of Staten Island, that includes many, many, many, of New York's finest, along with our heroic firefighters. I feel great because I OWN my own roof FULLY DETACHED AND PAID for, valued at over 1.5 million dollars, in one of SI finest areas, paid by my hard-earned money and sweat. I am the biggest supporter of NY's finest, and a strong advocate of preserving ethnic communities. I am an Italian American so this is not a rant against the Italian population.
I am just really disappointed looking at people of the same background and how deep they get caught up in the "must have a gaudy house and drive an escalade" lifestyle that they spend half their lives commuting and their kids are roaming around with no guidance. Friendships predicated on money, kids having no direction, etc, just messy lives...I see these people everywhere in the US but have seen an overwhelming amount on SI. Didnt one of your borough presidents have a son or grandson that stabbed a kid? If you and your family do not fit this description, then I tip my cap to you. Congrats on the house though.

First I said I "moved" which means I have been gone for a a couple of years. Two you sound like the typical SI South Shore person. And SI may have one of the highest incomes of the boroughs, but you spend more money. Therefore the high income is needed.
And I lived first near the Staten Island Zoo area and second near old Richmondtown on the south shore. So unless those areas had changed, those by no means where ghetto like some of the North Shore areas.

PLEASE! do not blame the people of Staten Island for what is happening to our society. Let's put the blame on the fact that our society has been deteriorating for a quite a long time, and let's put the blame on where it should be: THE CESSPOOL of Hollywood, and their quest on trying to push all their junk down our throats. MTV, and the glorification of HOODS IN THIS SOCIETY. with their rap music. THE BLING/BLING CONCEPT. The proliferation of PORNOGRAPHY and the MEDIA CONCEPT of placing sex even on Yogurt! DRUGS, ALCOHOL, PEDOPHILES, Corporate America, parents who have absconded their responsibility as parents. And the list goes on. Our teenagers are just overreacting to what they see and hear, and some parents, in their quest to make their children happy, are giving them too much, in order to keep up with what the MEDIA demands from them. So, please let's not try to put all the blame on the teenagers of STATEN ISLAND, and make STATEN ISLAND the scapegoat. Staten Island's population is mainly Russian, Irish, who teach their children an excellent work ethic, and Italians. I am not Italian, but I wish most children would have an Italian mother. Most are very loving, considerate, love their children dearly, and are there for them. Yes, we have some people from organized crime, they are everywhere. They mainly mind their own business, and keep a low-profile. But most Staten Islanders have moved here to give their children the best they can, and most are hard-working, law abidding citizens, who have tried to teach their children a good value system, but it is very hard to do, with all the influences out there that I just mentioned and their peer group. Staten Island, let me assure you: I have worked there as an Emergency Room Medical Professional for over 30 years, and yes, it has very lovely areas, where people have to work two jobs to pay their property taxes. But in New Jersey, YOU FIRST HAVE TO SEE THE FOREST FROM THE TREES! In many towns, there is plenty of trashy people , and drugs and alcohol are rampant. Most of the teenagers I treated were white, and everything is kept under secrecy. The newspapers and the police, barely touch what is happening there. They do not want the rest of America to know, because the corporations and the tourists will stop going there. It is only publicized when a minority member brakes the law, and then it is all over the news. Have you ever noticed that when New Jersey is ready to raise their property taxes, there is a multitude of television commercials all over the New York media advertising how wonderful their educational system is? Which it is: At the expense of the HIGH- PROPERTY TAXES for the schools, that EVERYONE has to pay, whether they have children or not!
