Not really much mystery here when you think about it. When you read about Bourdain's life it's obvious he was a classic self medicating manic depressive his whole life. Bipolar people have a very high suicide rate. He has probably been contemplating suicide most of his life. Then, he recently starts taking Chantix ( a drug known to have suicide and suicidal thoughts as a possible side effect ) ...... bingo, perfect storm.
So sad.
You may be right that he was diagnosed with Bipolar. Who knows.
He has been open that he has struggled with depression.
And yes, he may have been self-medicating with the drugs, for sure.
We don't know if it was the Chantix, or a break-up with his girlfriend, or just his underlying depression that caused the suicide.
Yes.
But Anthony Bourdain had both mental health and substance abuse issues for decades before Chantix.
But din’t you wionder if the doctir who wrote the prescription for Chantix knew or cared that Bourdain was probably bipolar and had a history? And if he hadn’t taken the Chantix he might not have been pushed over the edge?

I agree.
However, I read that he actually quit smoking in 2007 when his daughter was born.
So it doesn't seem like he was taking Chantix at the time of his death.
This hit me harder than any other celebrity death. I'm a big fan of his work.
This is unreal to me, I thought Anthony Bourdain would continue to be a presence for many years
