Anyone have a suggestion on a good jazz club. I am looking for a laid back place where I could get some dinner too. I am 27 so I place where a few other young people will be would not hurt either.

Cornelia Street Cafe in the Village. Their programming is diverse, meaning that they have poetry evenings, etc., so check to make sure that they are presenting improvised music that particular evening. The restaurant upstairs is quite good.
^^ good call w/ Cornelia Street. never caught the jazz downstairs, but ate there frequently. and there are some great artists featured. i'm still upset that i missed Dave Douglas one night. i was just too stuffed from the meal.
& its far less of a tourist trap like the VV or Birdland
What type of Jazz do you like: Contemporary,Traditional,etc..........

I used to go to Smalls on West 10th St, although I haven't been there in ages. I just checked their website, and it sounds like it's changed a lot since I last went there. Apparently they have a full bar now, whereas they used to be BYOB (don't know if they have food, though; probably not). They also would often stay open until 8 AM and have an open mic night where anyone with an instrument could just go up and play.
Lenox Lounge on 125th and Lenox Ave. 2/3 train right at the corner. Serves American/Soul Food. Variety of jazz acts and even blues some nights. Check their website for a schedule: lenoxlounge.com.
I've been at the Birdland and like it very much, also the Dizzy's club is a real nice place...and the view of manhattan is amazing from the huge window in the hall.
it's not laid-back, but the jazz standard, underneath blue smoke restaurant on e. 27th st, otherwise fits your criteria.
