The city has received an ultimatum from the federal government: it has until Jan. 31, 2019, to develop a plan of action to remediate NYCHA’s longstanding issues with management, lead, mold, heat, elevators and vermin or the agency falls into receivership.
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson sent the warning in a letter to NYCHA on Dec. 14. If an acceptable arrangement is not reached, HUD intends to declare NYCHA in substantial default of its legal obligation to provide decent, safe and healthy housing to its residents.
The city should got the other direction. Just dump NYCHA on the Feds, and walk away from it.
They are doing that slowly. But partially privatizing NYCHA, and converting the units to Section 8 housing, that is dumping NYCHA funding on the feds as Section 8 is a federal program.
I assume the Trump administration actions will really just push the city to complete privatization.

While someone like Bloomberg or Giuliani might have been willing to completely dump NYCHA on the feds, I can't see de Blasio doing so given the very real possibility that the feds completely dump NYCHA on private investors, which would/could lead to serious rent increases/further pushing people out of the city.
I hate that I am going to say this but... I wouldn't be mad at private investors or developers managing NYCHA. I can see NYCHA becoming nicer again, like the days when working families were allowed in and everyone else was not because this was changed due to "discrimination." Perhaps it might help with crime.

The feds will ultimately win. I cannot see the conservative Supreme Court siding with the city in this. Trump will privatize NYCHA.
