I was looking for a dive bar I used to go to with a friend of mine (no idea what it was called, somewhere on UWS, vaguely remember what it looked like on the inside ) and ran across this list. Sharing for fun.
This is one I have stopped in every so often: Dive Bar, 732 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10025.
If you really crave a sweet combo, you can go to the church across the street for an AA meeting, and then just walk outside and around the corner to Dive Bar to get your business done.

That's funny. I found them online when I was looking around. They have 3 locations. I may go to the one on 75th. I go to a writing workshop in that neighborhood .
Is Smith's still open? The article is a little dated, but says it's getting new owners. That wasn't a bad spot at all. Friendly staff, but definitely a little gritty.

Sorry, I didn't realize how old the article was. Looks like Smith's is still open. Google map is dated Aug 2018.
Man lot of great bars on there I miss.
Yes Smith is open, under new management. No longer cheap and quite the tourist crowd. Your better walking a block west to Rudy's if you want a cheap dive bar.
If it becomes too expensive to drink indoors then one can only drink outdoors.
Legalize beer open carry.
