I'm a big movie buff and love great sound with them. I have an incredible theater in my basement here in Colorado. I know I wouldn't be able to have what I have here but what about at least a nice soundbar with a couple of satellite speakers? I will be renting in a tower building - currently looking at the Eugene, Sky, and ARO, just so you know the type of building I'm talking about.

I just got back from a week in the city. I rented a 2-bedroom apartment in a building similar to the ones mentioned above. One thing I noticed was that I never heard a single sound from any neighbors the entire time. No footsteps from above, and nothing through any of the walls. Are the buildings made that well in the types of towers I am looking into?

It's not a deal breaker of course, I would give up the great sound if I had to so that I am not a bother to anyone, but it would sure be nice if I could at least have decent sound.

I have a home theater - but I have the sub woofer on an audio platform - and after 10 pm I never play the TV out loud - only through headphones.

You can have a good system without blasting the sound. And make sure the area is carpeted to avoid vibrations.

I live in a townhouse and have turned off my sub woofer for my neighbor's sake.

Quality of buildings vary in city, some are mausluem quiet, others you can hear your neighbors one or two flights up taking a pi**.

Sounds like you rented a pre-war apartment or something similar with thick plaster walls. Such units tend to offer more sound insulation than the drywall or glass garbage that started going up in 1960's onward.

People in NYC love to complain about any and every thing. Especially in multifamily housing which brings together various persons under one roof.

Loud music or sounds even during day may tick someone off to extent they either are banging on walls/floor/ceiling, calling police, or making complaints to landlord/building.

Have a pretty decent HT set-up, but never put things on full blast say after 11PM. Will use headsets or just turn things down.

home theatre systems and apartment dwelling does not mix very well.
no one wants to hear someone elses home theatre.

if it is that important to you, and we all have different levels of importances, a house, and even then would be your best bet.

but, I am thinking the newer buildings where concrete is inbetween floors would be good for you,

and i get it,

you like the system and want to enjoy it without bothering anyone,
and just on your concern for that,

i give you stars,

but it will also help you in listening to it as youll be aware when it is quiet time...etc..

youd be suprised at how many people living in apartments, and we have all read the horror stories of the floors vibrating... lol

I have a fairly substantial home theater. I've never gotten complaints.

On thing I do is isolate my speakers from the building. My main and surround speaker stand on granite tiles (left over from my renovation), that sit on foam pads (cut up computer mouse pads.) The subwoofer sits on an 1.25" thick granite slab, which sits on foam computer wrist rests (about an inch thick), so none of the vibration couples into the floor.

I don’t know if I read this on here or if someone told me (I think it was a story someone told me) but the story goes, a friend of a friend had a neighbor who would listen to porn on his home theater at nearly full volume. I hope that’s true because it’s hilarious.

I have debated doing this to my neighbors who are rude and never shut up.
One day I may end up doing it but I'd have to invest in some speakers and find out whats the best porn to play for noise.
