Hi There,
I'm looking for an affordable apartment in Bronx for my family (a couple with a 16 years old son). It comes to my notice that someone listed a rental located in Freeman st @ W Farms Rd. The price is very interesting. But i'm not sure if this location is a safe place to live. I'll appreciate your suggestions, especially from Hustla718, Scatman, and NooYowkur81

I doubt it's a safe place to live but it may be better than it was 30 years ago due to all the new construction and redevelopment. It's the classic part of the Ft Apache/East Bronx.

The last time I was on Freeman Street was about 5 years ago, but this wasn't near West Farms Road, it was lower down near Prospect Avenue, and damn near every house had bars on the windows. Also, a few people on the block complained of petty crime, like crackheads breaking into cars and stuff. The area didn't look all that safe to me at night. A lot of people had dogs in their backyards, I guess as a deterrent.

The little I've heard about that area has been pretty much negative. But I haven't really been around there so I won't make a comment. Anyone actually been around there recently?

Actually after google mapping it, I have been around that area. It's a rough area. I had a friend who had family over there and I would often drop her off around there. This was as recent as late last year. In recent years they built a big supermarket around there and other businesses have come in (there's some kind of like strip mall/plaza thing around there) as well, which was an improvement for an area that pretty much had nothing from what I understand. Like much of the Bronx it's actually been worse in the past but it's not a good area.

Little History...

North Bronx is a better bet. Allerton/Pelham Parkway areas are much much better. Apts for under 1K can still be had. Check around White Plains Road close to bronx park and anything east of Webster north of Botanical Square. Norwood near the Hospital is cool as well. South of gun hill, near Bainbridge.
