Yes, to really save money system would have to shut down between 1am and 5am and not run trains. Good luck with that because union won't allow that to happen. MTA and transit workers union just signed a new contract and the latter has no incentive to open things up.

To save money system would have to eliminate one shift of train operators and conductors; that again isn't going to happen.

Plus system in all honestly cannot be shut down easily. There is no place to store all those trains that they can easily be put back into service on their respective lines quickly. You can't park them on tracks because cleaning/maintenance crews need to get around.
Bugsy is correct. My window overlooks the train tracks. The still run between 1-5am. As much as I don't like the mta being 24/7, I was looking forward to not hearing the trains then. But thats not the case.

I can't view the article as it is behind a paywall.

The only lines that I could see being eliminated are the W & Z which basically run parallel to existing lines. Anything else makes no sense as people are rely on the subway system to get around most of NYC especially as not everyone has a car and driving isn't always practical for those who do have cars.

With how much NYC, NYS threw away billions of dollars on giveaways and frivolous waste and poor financial management, all that money could be spent on the MTA instead.

The MTA itself is a money pit that needs an overhaul but instead of changing, they got rid of the one guy (Andy Byford) that was trying to fix things there.

No fed money to these schmucks until they get their ship in order. Otherwise it would all get wasted immediately and then they’ll be asking for more. Oh and they need to go after farebeating.

On another note has anyone noticed how much more tagging (graffiti) has happened since MTA reduced service/shut down overnight due to covid-19? If you look out windows between stations graffiti is everywhere along walls of tunnels. Even the new tunnels for "Q" are becoming more and more covered in tags.
I love seeing the graffiti in the tunnels and along the walls of the trench tracks in south Brooklyn. The taggers are pretty talented and gutsy.

^ Gutsy or idiotic? If they get run over by a train, then their family will be suing the city.

Maybe both but I don’t hear of taggers being hit too often. They probably tag late at night when trains are less frequent or only running on a certain track.

The MTA should implement a rapid program to automate most, if not all of it's system. Get self driving/conducting trains, self driving buses, get robot cleaners, see if some of the other maintenance tasks can be automated. Then it cal lay off 2/3rds or so of it's workforce. Maybe then it could be break even.

Whenever you hear of some eggit being hit by a train in tunnel/between stations nine times out of ten it is either a slop artist or homeless. There just isn't anyone else or reason for being in a subway tunnel if you don't work for MTA or otherwise have legit business.
