In a doomsday prediction severe cuts to subway and other transit services are coming soon unless federal government ponies up big time for MTA.

That would be absurd. People have to go to work. That would mean even more people unemployed and Andrew Yang's idea of a guaranteed monthly income would have to come to fruition. Or just a massive permanent welfare class with a tiny minority of rich people that pay exorbitant taxes. This country needs to be rebuilt and restructured from the ground up with the working class top priority. The ultra rich psychopaths have outsourced everything. F#%k them.

Sniff sniff bub. I smell an mta fare hike coming at the end of the year. 3.25 for a single ride. 140 dollars for monthly unlimited.

Who's going to pay it?

Transplants and others are taking to bikes (Citibike, their own or whatever) instead of risking their health on subway trains or buses. Others are driving to and from city for same reasons, and the usual suspects will simply continue to evade paying fare.

Then you have fact ridership on MTA trains/subways is way down, and isn't expected to increase anytime soon. Employers aren't staffing 100% (especially offices), and large parts of NYC economy still are shut down (Broadway, performing arts, etc...), so there are less people riding mass transit.

WFH movement is the big outlier here; if that trend picks up steam and continues MTA can raise fares all they like, but it still won't bring in revenue needed because less people take trains/buses.

Lay off mta workers for the start and continue enforcing the 1am to 5am shutdown as a permenant fixture going forward.

NY already has exorbitant taxes and NYS ain't done yet.

Fact is that there needs to be a focus on productivity and supply side growth, otherwise NY would collapse. Maybe we should start a sovereign wealth fund to help fuel investment in NYS businesses.

Thing about that closure is it is mostly for show; trains still make their scheduled runs regardless.

Yes, to really save money system would have to shut down between 1am and 5am and not run trains. Good luck with that because union won't allow that to happen. MTA and transit workers union just signed a new contract and the latter has no incentive to open things up.

To save money system would have to eliminate one shift of train operators and conductors; that again isn't going to happen.

Plus system in all honestly cannot be shut down easily. There is no place to store all those trains that they can easily be put back into service on their respective lines quickly. You can't park them on tracks because cleaning/maintenance crews need to get around.

On another note has anyone noticed how much more tagging (graffiti) has happened since MTA reduced service/shut down overnight due to covid-19? If you look out windows between stations graffiti is everywhere along walls of tunnels. Even the new tunnels for "Q" are becoming more and more covered in tags.

WFH will stay mainstream. For both employers and employees, it has worked nicely.

NYC will need less mass transit.

A restructuring is in order. Do MTA workers still get pensions? Those need to be reformed/cut for future workers if so.

I do not support a federal bailout of the MTA, not when the organization spends billions of dollars on a single subway station and wastes money on other grandiose projects. Not to mention that the MTA takes in hundreds of millions (if not billions) in tolls each year also.
