For example, I'd rather live in River North in Chicago than Lower East Side.
What neighborhood would you say is better than River North?

What do you want? I find LES better than River North. In fact, Lincoln Park and Logan Square are much better neighborhoods than River North -to me-. It's not like we're comparing UWS to Englewood or Near West Side to East New York.

In fact, some people actually find East New York more desirable than the ghettos in Chicago! My doorman bought a house on the northern end close to the Queens border (Ocean Hill?) and loves it. Might be the higher wages, might be family, might just be NYC > Chicago or elsewhere for them. The black side of my family lives in Englewood and we saw them for Christmas. Was fun, but you really gotta stick to street smarts and stick to your own out there.

Forest Hills is great, Battery Park City is great, but these are completely different neighborhoods for a laundry list of reasons. Gotta know what you want before you generalize good and bad.
