A police officer shot a New Dorp man late Friday night after he allegedly tried attacking two officers with a metal pipe, the NYPD said......
The officers followed him to his apartment, “where he was able to pick up a two-and-a-half-foot metal pipe, which he began to swing at the officers...
Social workers would have ended up severely injured or killed. Lets say two SW were sent to the nutjob's apartment. He swings the pipe at them knocking one out. The other SW gets on the radio or phone and calls for NYPD backup. Best case is backup arrives in 10 minutes, in which time the nutjob would have started attacking the other helpless SW. Then he would have started attacking other people in his building or on the street. A 30 inch pipe can kill you or knock you out. This is the only way to handle violent nutjobs. Send in the cops, try to kill a cop you get shot. Period.

Only way libs will learn is when more of them start getting injured or dying from their own idiotic recommendations. After all, a conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.
The city plans to have mental health experts and EMTs answer 911 calls about people having a mental health crisis starting this spring.
NY1 has learned that the pilot program will be in Harlem and East Harlem in the areas patrolled by the 25th, 28th and 32nd precincts. City social workers and FDNY EMTs will be the response to non-violent mental health emergencies for the first time in NYC's history instead of NYPD officers. The goal is to de-escalate situations and get people help.
The Harlem and East Harlem neighborhoods had just over 9,000 mental health 911 calls in 2019. That's the second highest number of calls in the city.
The NYPD will still respond to mental health emergencies involving weapons or violence.
Again??? Decades ago this was called EDP (Emotionally Disturbed Person) calls. We had specially trained NYC EMS units who were sent to these calls and usually a NYPD unit was sent also. The only thing that is different is adding a social worker. I can't wait to hear about the training a social worker will go through to be fully prepared to deal with the darker side of NYC that no one talks about. I doubt there is any EMT who get's one of these calls, walks in expecting it to be a non-violent call.
A program in Manhattan that sends uniformed paramedics and social workers — not NYPD officers — to deal with 911 calls involving someone having a mental health episode is growing.
The pilot program is called B-HEARD, which stands for the Behavioral Health Emergency Assistance Response Division.
Since June, it’s covered three precincts in East and Central Harlem. This November, it will expand to two more police precincts in West Harlem.
“For the first time, people are able to get emergency mental health care where they are when the crisis occurs, whether it’s in their home, on the street, in a park, in a shelter or even in a subway,” said Susan Herman, the director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health.
The Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health was born from the city’s controversial ThriveNYC initiative, a set of mental health programs that critics scrutinized over its cost and effectiveness.
But the idea to send mental health workers and paramedics in place of NYPD officers was born from the initiative. In its first three months, B-HEARD teams, consisting of one social worker and two paramedics, took 342 calls, representing 23% of all mental health 911 calls.
Herman says it’s proving effective: People more often accept help from the teams rather than NYPD officers. And fewer people are taken to a hospital when the teams respond, compared to an NYPD response.
After launching in parts of Harlem this summer, New York City is planning to expand a pilot program that enables 911 to dispatch teams that are led by social workers to mental health calls instead of the NYPD. The B-HEARD program will cover all of Harlem by early November before expanding into the Bronx.
But new data released Friday suggests that even as the program’s reach grows, 911 operators still send the overwhelming majority of mental health calls — about three of every four — to police teams. It’s a protocol that New Yorkers with mental illness, their family members and mental health advocates have fought to change in recent years.
B-HEARD was often under-resourced and didn’t have enough personnel to handle all of the emergencies shared by 911 operators. The program had to redirect 17% of calls back to the police.
Regardless of the data, NYC views and treats the police as the enemy. So take them out of the equation. Though they are clearly needed, they aren't wanted, so using them only puts them in undue legal and physical danger. Let "B Real" or whatever they are called handle these jobs. If the data doesn't matter when denigrating the police, why would anyone think it matters when it shines the other way?
