Hi! Just a question--are there still folk singers or other street performers in Washington Square Park (in warmer weather, of course) or is that a thing of the past?
When were you last there to witness it? It was a thing when I was last there during warmer months, but that was years ago. I don't know why it would change (with the possible temporary exception of the covid environment).
I dunno, but those 20,000 or so dead people buried under the park are still there, including 660 who died in the 1798 Yellow Fever epidemic. COVID ain't NYC's first rodeo.
My lasting memory of WSP is from the early 1980s walking on the sidewalk heading to the subway at night after an NYU class and people jumping out of the park asking me what kind of drugs I wanted.
It's definitely still a thing. I walk by at least once a week and there's always a few different people performing. Guitars, pianos, dancers, etc. Skaters always there as usual. I wasn't alive in the 70s and I know it's not even close in comparison, but those who are saying no one performs there anymore are misinformed.
Right. I think it's been a long time since anyone well-known started out there--up-and-comers these days probably put their music on the Internet instead--but there are definitely buskers of various varieties.
You can still buy weed there, though! At least from my observations. Never done it personally.

Then you can remember in the WSP fountain the comedian Charlie Barnett getting the crowd worked up saying it showtime

Oh, sure. And sometimes in the past, there was an upright piano wheeled out into the park.
