Riverdale being so hilly offers great views throughout the neighborhood, be it East or West of Henry Hudson Parkway. Walking to Van Cortlandt Park is possible if you live say near or along Broadway, but coming from Manhattan, you will want to live up in the hills, which is the splash part of Riverdale that the neighborhood is known for. I also recommend Wave Hill, which is the former Estate of Mark Twain. It is near to the mansion that JFK grew up in.

Riverdale is a great mix of old and new. Families live there for generations. As for demographics, as I said it is mainly white. You will find Jews there who are not as conservative like the Orthodox Jews, Irish and Irish Americans, etc. There are also a small population of Japanese, Koreans as well, with some Latinos and a small amount of Blacks here and there, but majority White - Greeks, Italians, etc.

Wave Hill wasn't actually the estate of Mark Twain. He leased the house for two years (1901-1903) from William Henry Appleton, a publisher. The property was added to another large estate in the early twentieth century.

"By the closing years of the 19th century, Riverdale had become a year-round residential community. In 1870 and 1871, Appleton's summer villa was leased by the family of Theodore Roosevelt, then a young boy. From 1901 to 1903, Appleton’s heirs leased the house to Samuel Clemens, known to the world as Mark Twain, and his family.

One of the nation’s leading financiers and a pioneer in the field of conservation, midwesterner George Walbridge Perkins and his family first moved to Riverdale in 1893 when, at age 30, he assumed the post of vice president at the New York Life Insurance Company. In 1900, he became a partner of J.P. Morgan and was instrumental in the creation of U.S. Steel and other conglomerates.

Between 1893 and 1911, Perkins acquired numerous pieces of land, including the Appleton villa, to assemble an 80-acre estate. His purchases represent the core of today's Wave Hill."

The property has a fascinating history, including Arturo Toscanini's residence and visits by the Queen Mother Elizabeth of England.

You are right. It's been phrased poorly, but in fact he only lived there briefly.

Riverdale is safe but you can't compare it to Scarsdale.

Of course you can't. It is not part of the suburbs. However, it is ranked as one of the safest neighborhoods in NYC. Car theft is really the only real issue. As far as money goes, Fieldston (the estate area) could give Scarsdale a run for its money. Some parts have income levels above $175,000.
