I don’t know but leaving the big cities is always a smart thing to do before a major war.

Judging by the state of the Russian military and just how far ahead the US is technologically, this is a huge bluff from Russia and the only card they have left to play. The US wanted to dump missile defense sites all over Europe but the Russians always cried about it. Now, we're just going to do it because the Europeans will be begging for them over the next few years.

Anyhow, if Russia will deploy nuclear weapons, it won't be against us. Probability of failure would be too high. They'll go after Europe.

Is it fear that leads to this kind of thinking, or is this what TV news is telling you?

That post didn’t come across as particularly fearful.

Prices would shrink so much they'd be almost sub-atomic.

Russian ICBM's carry up to 800 kiloton Nuclear warheads:

"On a clear day with average weather conditions, the enormous heat and light from the fireball would almost instantly ignite fires over a total area of about 100 square miles."

So we're talking complete annihilation of Manhattan and most of Brooklyn, South Bronx, and Western Queens. I'd say it's time to make sure you have your iodine pills ready and a ready escape plan on short notice
I once took some type of emergency class given by FDNY. It was on the 00s. He gave us helpful tips, such as if there us a chlorine gas attack, go up higher in the building, as chlorine gas stays low to the ground. Don't walk in flooded streets because if a manhole cover is off and you fall in, you can never get out. And if there is a dirty bomb, you're only hope is to be in the deepest underground part of Manhattan, which is the lower reaches beneath. Grand Central. It goes 400 feet deep.

Direct hit by a nuclear weapon he didn't cover.

Which begs my question, what is the state of fallout shelters in NYC?

What capacity is there for sheltering a large population.

I wouldn’t want to imagine surviving this, even on the outskirts of a major metropolis.

For anyone interested in knowing more about Putin’s mind, there is an excellent PBS documentary series a couple years old on Frontline. You can access a bunch of them on YouTube. I’ve listened to all of them while working. It’s also a great portrait of the transition from soviet to kleptomaniacal statehood.

Let's just say I'm very familiar with that part of the world and I have a little better grasp of the situation than you do. Especially Russian military doctrine.

We would already be in Ukraine if it wasn't for the Europeans and the fear of a wider conflagration and more destruction on that continent. The threat isn't to the US mainland. By th grace of whomever, the US mainland is in in one of the most strategically defensible positions on the globe. Even from ICBMs. The Russians know this well.
