For the relative newcomers, or for those who ignore the New York Times, Al Hirschfeld was a cartoonist/caricaturist often featured in the NYT - especially in the Sunday entertainment section. His line drawings were great, but there was an additional bonus: the Nina references. Hidden in the drawings, he would include the name of his daughter Nina. Then someone taught me that when there was a number after his signature, it referred to the number of Ninas. So you'd hunt for them - often in a character;s hair, or maybe the fold of a sleeve, or the fringe on a dress.
I was recently explaining this to a non-NYC friend, and it just so happened that the NYT had run a full page of Hirschfeld drawings, so I sent them to my friend, who enjoyed the hunt.

I miss that.
Another great NYC thing.
