Any temps in the 50s or low 60s will have me opening the windows. I do have to cool off the room first though. The lowest temps are around 4-5 am.

The last three days I have turned the AC off and opened windows and vents. All
was well and comfy until this morning when I woke to the smell of boiling tar/rubber...light but annoying. Thinking no point to sealing the apartment and trapping the smell in, I waited until 9:30 AM and a diminution of the tar smell to seal the place and turn on the AC.

"Fresh air" is a rare commodity in NYC.

Of course not. It can still hit the 80's during mid October.

Past several days haven't been very warm, but were and still are quite moist. So even if night time temps are in 70's which is rather refreshing, it's still muggy and moist so you don't feel as cool.

People are killing their air conditioners trying to make them do something they're not exactly designed for; act as dehumidifiers.

AC like any sort of refrigeration will by default remove moisture from air, but as ambient temps drop things become less efficient.

It's like driving when weather is muggy and moist but cool. Defogger alone won't help, so you've either got to turn on heater and or crack window. Otherwise things just fog up regardless.
