There's a world of difference between 1983 or even 1993 and today. Far better to know before going down the hole if trains are running or what. This or after standing on a platform for > 15 mins to get some sort of answer as to WTF is going on.
Yeah, New York City Transit and MTA existed for ages before modern tech. And for most of that time system sucked. Things may only be marginally better today, but at least having tech at your finger tips gives options no one dreamed of years ago.
If one has a smartphone, one can simply search for MTA alerts and access the information online via the MTA website.
Twitter updates were always faster than official alerts, plus it allows public user feedback.
Sometimes train delays do not even show up on alerts, or show up like 30 minutes late. Meanwhile you're waiting for a train for 20 mins cause it is delayed due to NYPD investigation.
