15% is standard for a cab driver, but I tend to tip a bit more and round it to the nearest whole dollar for a medallion driver, or go with the flat rate as for the car service. You're certainly fine at 15%, however, so you don't need to adjust your current level.
Yes, you are expected to tip for good service. While it's optional, I always overtip. These are people who usually are incredibly hardworking, who have to cope with increasing gas prices without any increase in fares (yet their daily leases on the cabs can go up!) and send every penny they can back home. And it's a dangerous job! We tip here unless the service was really abysmal.
Hardworking? I'm not sure if I can concur. I've met far many more people that have harder and more respectable jobs than the taxi drivers that are always trying to "get lost" en route and rip me off.
Page, you must have a pretty good job to be giving away all this money in tips ju awre loco far giving $7 tip mami!!I dont even wanna know how much you spend in tips alone a month probably more than i spend on gas a month geeze-la-weeze!!!
My bf says that I overtip..and I actually consider myself quite frugal.
I guess it's from being a waitress. Waitressing SUCKS. Big time. So perhaps I "feel" for them? Also, I'm only an Office Worker . Not rich. Just good with my money.
I don't know how much they make but the Yellow Cab drivers are independent businessmen, so their income would depend on how hard and fast they work and on the price of gas.
The biggest expense for many cab drivers is the cost of the medallion. Medallions are auctioned off for typically a half million dollars. They are financed with huge loans that the drivers have to pay off.
I'd been patronizing the same Licenced Massage Therapist for about two years before I found out that he welcomes tips. So I started to leave him tips but not big ones. I DO think "tipping" has become too liberal. Can someone out there tell me WHY an LMT should expect tips when they charge at least $1 a minute for a massage???

I agree. I suppose if they do an awesome job then it's great..if it's just average..then they don't need a tip.
I think the problem with tipping is that there are a lot of situations where it's actually expected. You're supposed to tip for good service, not bad. I don't have any problem being generous when tipping--but I refuse to reward anyone for doing a lousy job, particularly in a restaurant or cab.
