I would like to know about safety of the following two areas

173rd St between St. Nicholas Ave and Amsterdam Ave

146th St and 8th Ave

I would be staying in the Highbridge Hostel which has accomodations at both locations. This is for an 18yr old white female.

If they are safe neighborhoods, is it safe to take the subway or train, especially at night or is a taxi better?

Washington Heights or East Harlem? Not the best neighborhoods. Definitely take a cab a night if your alone, which might be difficult because cabbies are reluctant to take fares that far up town.

How safe/unsafe is it? Would you walk around there?

Here is an area close to where you're going too.

177th St Nick

YouTube - 177 wash heights !!!!Guerraaaaaaa!!!

Thats Washington Heights...aka Home of the haze.

Harlem isn't any better. But my gut feeling is that atleast the city recognizes it, and has some "gentrification". Washington Heights is still pretty slummy. Harlem isn't much better, so it's pick your posion.

They may be reluctant but, legally, they can't refuse.

Yellow cabs dont really venture uptown. The lincoln town cars (livery cabs) usually work uptown and the Bronx.

Legally the yellow cabs are supposed to take you to anywhere in Westchester, Nassau and staten Island too... haha yeah okay the only yellow cabs you see in any of those counties are cabbies going home for their five hours sleep before tomorrow's shift.
