Didn't Greyhound make up some budget bus line to compete with the Chinatown buses? I think its called Bolt, not sure. I would think those are a little more reliable.

I took the the chinatown bus to DC once worked out great. I've taken the chinatown bust to Boston a dozen or so times and it was quite efficient.

I wouldn't take Chinatown bus either.. but other bus companies such as Bolt or Megabus can get you to DC for as low as $1.

How does one get that for one buck? What's the catch?

Check the bus schedules for service disruptions, and plan on it taking a longer time than usual. Some of the stations will have difficulty being serviced on Inauguration Day itself because of their location. Limo-lock is horrible at Inaugural time, due to road closures, and DC's already horrible traffic becomes nearly impassible. This happens for other events as well, but the Inaugurals are always the worst for the traffic situation.

So, it's best to arrive in the early hours of the morning, leaving NYC at an odd hour since blocks in all direction are closed to all vehicular traffic. That will get you to the parade route at an early hour as well, which is a plus. And, depending upon the guidelines, some of the routes are open in the morning, very early morning, and then are closed to create a secure perimeter.

And, remember the Inaugural Parade route on Pennsylvania Avenue is not that long, hence the high number of people crowded into the area to view the parade and passers-by. That's one reason why the tickets are required, and the other is security.

It can be done, but plan accordingly. It's not as simple as hopping on the Chinatown bus, waving to the President-elect or President (depending upon time of day), and leaving.

I regret to reiterate this point for interested parties, but some Chinatown operators do not have a great record. In the scenario you referred to, one may quite well end up waving only to the state trooper trying to rescue one from off the road.

LOL...indeed. Mega and Bolt are more reliable from what I have been told by people who have used the services.
