Hey, one thing I don't understand about NYC is how come all the supposedly "hood" and "ghetto" areas are so expensive? How can some of the thugs and gangbangers that populate these areas in NYC afford to live there? It's kinda frusturating that people who work a steady living can't live in, say the South Bronx or whatever area, but the person who makes a living off stickin people up and slanging the occasional gram of bud can afford to live in his $1,300 studio. Kinda defeats the purpose of bein a gangbangin thug if u can afford what most people with money can't even afford, and your apartment in the worst neighborhood is more expensive than the best neighborhoods of some other major cities. How is it possible? Please fill me in on the secret, it's confusing.
That's the whole point, the 'hood' has been priced out of NYC which is a main reason for the dramatic drop in crime in the city (along with state of the art 'police state' tatics).
First the rent in many of these neighborhoods aren't that high. Second, these people live off government assistance. Many live in projects and pay very little rent. Finally, drug dealing is a very lucrative trade. Which is why many drug dealers can afford the newest cars and all types of jewlery.
Can you please elaborate on which neighborhoods in NYC aren't expensive? Like a an area where a studio will go for around $500-700 a month?
unless you find a rent-controlled apartment, or if you're on govt. assistance, i doubt you will find a studio for this price in NYC. you may find a basement studio for $700 in some parts of Queens or Staten Island but thats about it.

Mott Haven, Morrisania, East Tremont and sorrounding areas you may find a 1 bedroom apartment worth that much.
Negative, ghost rider! I live in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Mott Haven is the "nice" term they use for The South Bronx. Also known as, the hood. But, truth be told, you will not find anything in this area for that price. Unless, you find rent controlled apartments. Maybe, it's possible to find a studio for a little more but, maybe try looking into renting a room or something. Even those could run upwards of $150.00 a week.
Good luck.
I saw a listing recently for a house in Brownsville, on the market for $400,000. There is no more "reality" in real estate!
There are some nice houses in Brownsville actually. My co worker bought a house there 5 years ago and he says the part that he lives in is really nice. He did mention that there is another side of Brownsville that isn't so good.
