can any one tell me how the neighborhood is in canarsie i used to live 102 east 79 street i miss the neighborhood i grew up in moved away in 1975. i am going back to visit soon.
It has changed- and unfortunately not for the better. MY family moved to the area in the early 90s. Slowly but surely people began moving away, businesses began closing down (Ave L doesn't even look the same). When I came for a visit (my parents still live there) Canarsie was actually in the news for having a murder! My parents are about to move down south, they no longer like the area.
I also lived in Canarsie....101st street, then moved to 93rd street
moved out to California in the mid eighties.
went back to Canarsie with my husband in 2003. Actually parts of it look pretty good...although the Italian grocery store on Rockaway was gone (Scaturro's)
the little pizzeria by the subway exit on Rockaway was still there though!!!
But then of course there is alot that has changed...not for the better...it's sad
My husband & I walked from 101st all the way down to 93rd so I could show my husband all the old hangouts
Holy Family Church...I also showed him the old Auto Chop Shop on the end of 101st street and then we didn't go up any further than 105th for obvious reasons!
I used to have alot of good friends who lived in the projects, but even then we wouldn't be caught dead walking up there after dark...
We also didn't walk down to Ave L on our trip, but I'm sorry to hear it has changed...
I do remember seeing the deli down that way totally delapidated...how sad!!!..oh my God..do either of you remember the L Boys? ahahahaha
Also the candy store by Canarsie High
Hamburger Annie...and the residence of I think it was Seaview Mental Facility who would escape from the facility and come walking down Rockaway with no pants....
I miss the excitement of Canarsie & Brooklyn in general...there was alwasy something going on!!!

grew up in canarsie, sure i remember the l-boys ,had more than 1 fight with them......... lived on the same block as ps115 and joes pizza.. left in the 70's ,, canarsie hs 70
It has changed dramatically. You woldn't want to be caught dead in that area. There are a few people hanging in there closer to seaview. They were considering closing the school due to bad performance and violence. My in laws family had an auto repair in canarsie for years. They closed up in the early 90's. The area changed so much. They were robbed twice in one yr and had never had any problems for 20+ yrs.
Its strange to me, the new settlers of Canarsie are of African American decent and are buying the homes there for almost 10x the original cost and people consider the neighborhood "bad."
Its middle class neighborood with strong family values.
Its just another case of white flight in canarsie.
thats called inflation and 2 people working..... when i grew up there i didnt know many kids i was friendly with who's mom worked
it was rare back then to have 2 income familys. at least in canarsie in our group of friends but i think most of us baby boomers would say the same thing, moms didnt really work
