Ok well the four main Irish areas in Queens to live are Woodside, Sunnyside, Maspeth and a few Irish live in Astoria. If All areas are safe enough but being a girl take a cab at night because esp in Sunnyside ive know a few guys to get mugged walking on there own at night.
Girls usually work bartending or waitressing which if you find the right bar you can do well even in irish bars in Queens. I dont know if you are both students but the worst time to come looking for work is the summer because the Irish bars take advantage of the fact theres so many students looking for work and work is hard to find in the city too. Same in construction some company's will try and hire you for $10 an hour.
Rent is pretty cheap in Maspeth. I'm in a quiet neighbourhood in a four bedroom house for $1800 between three. Usually you can rent a room for 550-650 a month.
Nightlife is class cause theres always something to do or somewhere to go 7 nights a week in Manhattan not like Ireland. If you work in a bar or restaurant you make friends easily with staff and customers and bars beside where you work. One big tip is look after your bartender tips wise and he will look after you drinkswise.
Being illegal is fine once you dont do anything like fly or drinkdrive basically anything that brings you to attention of cops or homeland security. Ive only heard of irish people getting deported while trying to bord a plane or getting pulled for drink driving.

Hope some of that helps.
it does help, cheers. Sounds like a class life over there i can't wait to head over
Yeah thats a help. I was thinking about woodside i have family there and ive been there before and think its pretty cool.
How do you go about finding a job? Just walk in and ask like here in Ireland?
Yeah im a student but not for much longer will be finished in june!
Yeah go into bars and ask. Do up a resume (cv) too. Irish papers over here do have classifides but lately with the bad economy theres no jobs in the papers. Really your best bet is through word of mouth. Usually somone knows somone where theres a job going. Goodluck
Hey guys came across this thread, hoping you might be able to give me some advice. Moving over to Ny in March/Apr on the year-long visa. At the moment i'm searching for somewhere to live. Ideally I would love the Woodside/Sunnyside area would ye recommend craigslist to try and get a room with an Irish gang or arrive out book a hotel and do the searching on foot and in person when I arrive?? Thanks a mill.
It's probably one of the most isolated areas in the city, but Breezy Point in Queens, all the way out at the western tip of the Rockaway Peninsula, also has a large Irish population.
I read that Breezy Point has the highest concentration of Irish Americans in the nation at 63%. Take that, BAH-stun!
Pretty much every boro in NYC has at least a few Irish strongholds, and I wouldn't be surprised if these extend beyond the city into some parts of Westchester, Long Island, Jersey and Connecticut (like in Stamford where I've met a few from Ireland and various parts of the UK).
I've never met a starving Irishman in NYC. The luck of the Irish seems to be reserved for those that leave & make it here! I married an Irishman, so I've seen it firsthand.
Woodlawn is WAY too Irish... You'll never really get a full NYC experience out there, because as someone said, it's the 33rd county. Stick to Sunnyside, or Maspeth if you must live in an Irish community.
The Irish end up doing well at scoring jobs just by going into bars & mingling with other Irish people. They really look out for one another, because they know what it's like coming over. As an Irish woman you'll do really well & end up as a bartender, waitress, or nanny, quite easily. Best of luck!
