If you understand the name then you'll take it for some Bronx cred. Everyone's opinions on the area are pretty much spot on. I will second, then tripple, the benefit of being in walking distance from Arthur Ave. THE best neighborhood in the borough. At least that's what my stomach thinks. I wandered through the Bronx one afternoon and wound up coming out on Webster Ave. up into Fordham plaza. Not the greatest places but if you walk and act like you belong, no one will challenge you. I also agree to the high police presence around the area. The major corridors arround campus Fordham Rd., Webster Ave., Mosholu Pkwy., are all fine. It sounds also that you might get over your ego a little bit and accept the fact that there are some things different than what you know (CUNY schools, Fordham theology etc.). You're isolation in your beliefs will hinder you anywhere you go, especially in NYC.

Thank you, I agree! Do you know what NYC is like? You gotta be veryyyy understanding and accepting here.
My family doesn't think I'm ready to jump from suburbia to the middle of Manhattan straight out of high school. Personally, I think I am and to be honest, I hate Los Angeles. It was nice until I realized that there are other better places such as SF, NYC, and Chicago. I like urban places. But, they just don't think I can handle the move.
Now that I think about it though, the Bronx would be even farther down their list.
They said even if I apply and get accepted into NYU with enough financial aid, it is still completely out of the question. Even with a full scholarship they would still be iffy about it. Needless to say, I'm not too happy with my family right now and they don't understand that this controlling attitude they have is another reason why I want to move so far away.
Haha that's funny considering the Bronx is much more urban, gritty and dangerous than the village. NYU is the safest campus out of any NYC college. Just because there's tall buildings around it doesn't make it dangerous haha. Weird logic.
There's a couple million scared suburban white kids just like you who went to that school before you, and they were fine. You should really take that in to consideration. There are lots of great schools in "bad" areas, Yale for example, and kids aren't getting attacked and robbed all the time. Gangsters don't attack people because their young, white, and soft. If you walk around with a wad of cash in your hand someone will take it from you, or if you leave your bike on the street unchained it will be gone when you return. Just try to be a little street-smart.
Personally, I'd tell your parents to beat it and go to NYU - that's an awsome school in a great location!!!
Fordham university is just a few blocks away from the Belmont section of the Bronx. This area homes Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church which is over 100 years old. It is a magnificent church. Arthur Ave is 2 blocks from the Church and Belmont Ave. Arthur Ave is Little Italy of the Bronx. Many of the restaurants and businesses are 100 years old. They keep the Italian heritage alive. The Market is a place you want to see. There is great food in Little Italy. I was born and raised in that neighborhood as was my Father. My family went back to the late 1800s. The neighborhood had a rough time in the 70s and 80s but it has been on a rebound since the 90s. I'm in NC 44 years and I miss Arthur Ave and Belmont Ave and 187th Street every single day. The Church is on 187th Street. My family is all gone. No one to visit anymore.

I don't mind the people of NYC. I actually love NYers. I know not all you are the same, but the stereotypical ones are my favorite. And actually they are helping me pay if it's not for something in NYC or Boston.
I'm leaning more towards Biology I think. And I have really good grades, but just OK SATs so I think it would kind of be insulting my own intelligence to go a CUNY. I might as well go to San Francisco State for the same education at a much lower cost.
Some CUNY schools are quite competitive to get into - Baruch, for example, has a 28% acceptance rate, which makes tougher to get into than even NYU. Hunter and CCNY's acceptance rate is on a par with NYU's. Biology I think would be Hunter or CCNY. A close relative of mine went to Baruch undergrad and has no MBA, but is still way up there in position and in making serious money at a major investment bank. The three schools I just mentioned are just as well respected - maybe even more so, as Fordham. So do not discount the CUNY system. And I say this as someone who graduated from Columbia Univ. undergrad and did some grad work at NYU.
You might consider Grand Concourse which is near to Fordham. There is an Express train which goes to Manhattan.
Am here to say MetroNorth is a true *express* into Manhattan, not the subway.
