I live on 11th Street between Avenues B and C. It's ain't cheap, certainly not in the way the OP wants. Shares start around $1,000 and go up from there. He's looking for something around $700. I've never heard of anything that low without some serious (i.e., sexual) strings attached.

you should move to Williamsburg/Bushwick in Brooklyn. You could afford pretty much any share between the graham ave stop and the Morgan stop on the L train. That is pretty much were everyone in your situation moves to so there is quite the little community going. I have a lot of fun down there.

OP: is there a reason why you have to live in New York?

700 eh? That'd be tricky. Before my rent went up 100 bucks, my roomate and I each paid 800 dollars for a converted 2 bedroom in Manhattan valley (far upper west side, below 110th). I doubt you'd be able to find a roommate in a genuine 2 bedroom with a living room for under 2,200 dollars in the nice areas of Manhattan (by nice I don't necessarily mean luxury), but there are plenty of 1 bedrooms that can very comfortably be made into 2 bedrooms (with a wall put up). There are also plenty that can't.

Bushwick sounds like the place for this young artist. I think they call it East Williamsburg or something like that now???
