I'm moving and really can't decide where to look. I work in Long Island City and live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, right now the commute is excellent, 3 miles, going all back roads but I need to buy something and I'm priced out of Williamsburg. I can't afford to much, $325K at the most
Any suggestions on where to look?
Ideally would like a nice back yard and porch to walk out into, near the subway and near the water all good things. I would love to buy a 2 family and spend a little more but I'm probably looking at a condo or coop.
I don't really want to cross any bridges but I guess my 2nd question is,is the commute over the Triborough bridge worth the daily hassle?
Otherwise I'm thinking of going into Queens or Brooklyn further.
As long as you're already in the area...what about Greenpoint? Or the northern reaches of Bushwick, currently being colonized (but more likely to be called Wyckoff Heights)? For that matter, since you already work there, you could look around Long Island City itself.
This may come as a radical--perhaps unacceptable--notion to you, but you might consider doing what people in NYC have been doing for the last century: follow the subway lines. A neighborhood halfway across Brooklyn or Queens would still be a fairly quick commute to Long Island City by subway.
Prices are falling in Williamsburg, so I'd keep an eye on the market, depending upon the size apartment that you desire. If Williamsburg is in flux, however, the market is not as stable as a Kew Gardens or Rego Park where you might find something in your price range, and the drive would not be too bad to LIC.

I would rather not live near where I work as I would bump into too many people I know outside of work which I would rather avoid.
I know the market is really iffy at the moment but I've been putting off buying something long enough I feel though I do think I should wait a couple more months to see what happens, especially in my hood.
I will look into the areas suggested, greenpoint and bushwick Thanks again
