We are looking to move next year but I want to do some research now into the local schools. Does anyone have any insight into or a list of the Public School numbers and their zones for Brooklyn? The only one I could find was for PS321 and I think I'm tripping if I think I can afford to live in the area without sacrificing my kids' educations - both are in elementary school now but one will be heading off to middle school in two years time. We will be moving from Australia and it is near impossible for us to make head nor tail of this education system! Any input is greatly appreciated.

Brooklyn schools suck. Some forumers may disagree but I am basing it upon what I have seen. NYC high schools were rated the third worst schools in the nation. JHS are similar to HS. Elementary schools are usually a better becuase the kids are more controllable. Still in certain areas the schools are run down and lack activities.

Try private school if you move.

If you're looking for good schools, look at the suburbs. NYC public education is the bottom of the barrel.

The elementary schools are all the same.

Junior High Schools to look into are Mark Twain...

Good highschool would be New Utrecht, Brooklyn Technical HS, Fort Hamilton.

Look at www.insideschools.org for reviews of public schools. Some schools are for a specific zone and others are open to a certain area by lottery.

Yup and the few "good" schools in NYC are hard to get into. Everyone wants in. It drags the school down. Lots of undesireable students and overpopulation. Even the good schools here in NYC get blown out by schools in Jersey, Westchester, Orange, and Long Island.

If you move to NYC you have to send your kids to Catholic school or some other form of private schooling if you hope for them to get a top-notch education. You can find decent schools in the city, but I doubt they will be up to your Australian standards.

Default Looking to move to Brooklyn

Thanks to all who responded - now I'm really worried. Ah well, I'm sure we will all adjust and I'll just keep looking.

If anyone needs advice on Australia, just drop me a line!

Cheers.
