I am thinking of moving to NYC . I want to know the cheapest areas in Manhattan ? I am intrestead in going to Harlem or Washington Hts. which are both parts of Manhattan I heard have reasonable rent. I want to know which neiborhood is cheaper to live and have good access to public transportation. I will be planning on working in Jersey City or Newark NJ.
any information is appreciated .
Cost-wise it's really about the same honestly. There might be a bit more of a range in Harlem since Harlem is bigger and is made up of about 4-5 sub-neighborhoods. If your considering Harlem and Washington Heights you might as well check out Inwood too so you can have even more options.
Dude, if you're working in Jersey, you should live there. Even if you work out of state, you have to pay an extra city tax if you live in NYC. Why pay a premium to live in a crappy neighborhood? You could live much better in Jersey City with easy access to Manhattan.
That said, if you absolutely must live in Manhattan, I prefer West Harlem near City College. I lived there for about a year and never had any problems and a really cheap room in a share. The building itself was kind of gross (roaches and rats), but it was cheap and looked out over the Hudson.

I agree with most of what you said, but um I dont think the quality of life is much better in Jersey City than the mentioned neighborhoods. If you live on the waterfront yes its pretty nice, but most other areas are a real hit or miss.

The OP can't be too picky if they are looking for the cheapest neighborhoods in Manhattan. It's also a commute I wouldn't want to do by public transport and owning a car in the city is a whole different hassle.
your going to find the same things cost wise, but I think nooyorker81 made a good point by also looking into inwood as well to give yourself some more options.

Yes that is true. When I lived in JC the main thing I liked about it was that I could keep my car . Although I did live in a bad neighborhood and had 2 break ins . To the og poster I would check out areas of NJ if your going to be working there. Considering you are moving to new york from somewhere else, what do you consider cheap first of all? NYC cheap and where you are from are two different thing trust me. Realize that even in Harlem and Washington Heights neighborhood a crappy one bedroom on the 4th floor of a walk-up will still cost you over a $1000 on the low end.
The commute from Wash. Heights to a Newark or JC job would be HORRIBLE! Does not make sense in my opinion. Move to JC. That is a no brainer. Cheaper and still things to do, mass. trans., etc.
I didn't realize when I read your post OP that you are going to work in Jersey. It that is so I agree with the others, you should really stay in Jersey. It makes no sense to live here and pay the NYC tax.
