Well, if you take the train to Grand Central, you can take the 6 train from there. In general, I prefer routes with fewer transfers because there's less of a chance for things to go wrong.
I Stared a new job in the city and need to get there by public transportation, what is the best way to get from Paramus NJ to E71th st/Lex ave ?
I can take a bus from my house to port Authority, and after that what subway would I take to get to 79th and Lex?
I also have an access to a NJ transit train next town over which goes to Grand Central. Not sure if its better to take a train to the city or Buys.
By my own research I think I can take a bus to Port authority, then E train to Lexington ave, then 6 train to 68th st.
What would you guys suggest?
Thanks
NJ transit doesn't go to Grand Central. It goes to Penn Station.
From Penn Station, take the IRT up to 42nd street, then the 'S' train (the shuttle) crosstown to the Lexington Ave. IRT, then the LOCAL Lexington Ave. IRT to 77th St.
From Port Authority you can walk across town to Lexington (that'll take about 15 minutes or so) and then the Lexington Ave IRT uptown. Or you can take the 42nd St. Shuttle and then the Lexington Ave IRT.

It's also possible to cut down on the number of subway transfers by taking advantage of the free subway-to-bus transfer MetroCard allows. From Penn Station, take the #2 or 3 express up to 72 Street, then transfer to the 72 Street crosstown bus. That'll put you precisely one block north of Lexington and 71st.
r u close to route 3? if so you can take the njtransit bus (190, 191, 192) to the port authority and MTA from there. It's an easy commute if you are close to a bus route...
