Someone else mentioned Grimaldi's Pizza in Brooklyn Heights. Follow that with ice-cream at Brooklyn Ice- Cream just down the block at the Fulton Ferry Landing.
If you guests like to walk, a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to downtown Brooklyn is a great way to get a taste of the city and work up an appetite. Keep in mind that if you do go to Grimaldi's you will probably have a 45 minute wait on line, there are no reservations. The pizza is the best and the prices are cheap for what you get.
Looking at Fulton Street Landing from the block of Grimaldi's Brooklyn Heights (Grimaldi's was just behind me in this photo).
Sunset, Fulton Ferry Landing, with view of Brooklyn Bridge
Wasn't Katz's featured on Anthony Bourdain's show? Either way I know I've heard of it, and that's exactly the type of place I was looking for.
In any case I'm going to be at the disposal of the "group" for most of the weekend and I see us probably sticking to Manhattan for most of the weekend. I might try to sneek into Brooklyn on Sunday though....haven't been and I have an old friend living there I might try and look up.
.....and I would call a $85 steak pretentious....regardless of the setting it's served in.
For family style Italian that's out of this world, you've gotta hit Carmine's. It's in the theater district and can be hellish trying to get in there on the weekend though, so I would suggest making reservations early if at all possible.
Forget Grimaldi's, go to Lucali! Better pizza, better atmosphere. 575 Henry Street between Carroll and 1st Place in Carroll Gardens. GQ ranked it #2 pizza in the country. Also, not sure if you're into vegetarian/vegan, but Red Bamboo at 140 West 4th St. is some of the best food you'll find in the city, all faux-meat dishes, but in some cases better than the real thing.
