What is the cheapest internet service to get in NYC, if I only need internet and no phone service or anything else--simply Internet. By ASL (modem) or Wi-Fi (either is ok). Thanks for any info.
You can get Earthlink or Road Runner via Time Warner for a low monthly introductory rate for the first year without getting cable tv/phone service. But you make need to make a one year internet service commitment.
Timewarner Internet costs $45/month with a 2 year contract.
The basic Verizon DSL package is $20/ month with no contract.

According to Verizon website, the $20/month is if you also use their phone service, so you'll have to pay for the phone bill, too, so it will come out more. Without phone, it seems $30 (I assume this is before tax?).
I wonder if there is a way to get Internet less than $30?
I lived for years in Brooklyn using someone else's( don't know who's) wi fi.More and more people are locking them now but you would still be amazed at how many open one's there are.
Now that I'm paying optimum I notice that there are at least 3 or 4 open wi fi's in my building in The Bronx almost all the time. Not sure if they are all from my building or some from the building behind me.
So the cheapest way to get it is for free if you can!
Yes free is the best I'm not knowledgeable about the wifi stuffs, so I wonder, could those people lock their wifi if they want? Or are there wifi that can't be locked even if they want to?
If you're really in a pinch and need to use dial-up (gasp!) there's MetConnect, NYC's free ISP. MetConnect - New York City's Free ISP - 100% free. Just have to download the software first (which of course you will need some other connection for.)
It's not cable/dsl speed, but when I used it regularly many years ago, I would leave it on all the time as if it were since dialing a local number didn't cost anything. The speed was ok. Might be even faster now, since most people use cable/dsl now and are not clogging up the lines.

Connecting to somebody WI-FI stream without their permission is illegal even if it's wide open. If you are caught you'll be fined unless there is more to that. To catch you is very simple, call the cops and show the modem's log that will prominantly display your computer's MAC address, the time you connected and everything else.
There are two major providers in NYC, there is Verizon ADSL with very reliable 3Mbps service for $30/mon, which requires 1 year contract, there is also Time Warner cable for $35/mon without contract, which is rated 15 Mbps down with 30Mbps boost. Cable as usual has latency issues, depending on particular location, your actual speed and QoS may vary greately.
There is always an option to use cellular 3G network. I used AT&T for a while, the speed and coverage unpredictable and it's costly.

I did the same thing when I lived in Manhattan even though I was paying for internet. I just didn't have a wireless router so I used someone else's when I wanted to use my laptop off of my desk. Never got caught. Is it right, no not really, but its not the same thing as running a cable wire from someones apartment into yours.
