City Island is a GREAT place to live, though it is remote. But that's what public transportation is for. There aren't many real hipster/artsy places in the Bx. Bx has always been about the commuter worker joes/janes. Again that's what trains and buses are for. Find yourself a place close to a train/bus and you're golden.
City Island is a tough commute to Manhattan and you probably will not be able to find anything for 1K a month, but in this economy you may be able to. Most rentals are in houses and you will need to pay for heat too.
Yo, if people are gonna throw City Island your way, might I suggest Parkchester? It's kind of like Stuyvesant Town in the Bronx, and it's on the 6 line. There are some different pro's and cons to it, but as someone who also is looking to return to NYC, after a few years of transiting through the Midwest (Detroit in my case), at about a $50,000 salary, it's on my list of places to check out.
I'll check out Mott Haven (I shall always and forever reserve SoBro for the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corp, thank you very much) at some point in the next few weeks, hopefully with SoBroGuy's guidance (he seems willing to be cajoled), and I'll let you know what I find out.
Thanks folks. Right now I'm thinking that City Island would make for an exhausting commute. Parkchester, Sunnyside, and "SoBro" are still on my radar screen. This has all been very helpful.
I was suddenly asked to return to my teaching position (from a leave of absence), but finding a sublet has turned out to be next to impossible on such short notice. Crazy, but I have until Friday to find a place--long distance. This is a long shot, but if anyone knows of anyone (sane and responsible please...lol) who is subletting send me a direct message. If not, oh well. Back to my original plan of returning in August. The plot thickens.
