If you dont tell anyone your in AA then no one would know. Just stay away from the drinks. There are some bars there but not too many its a good area.
This was my first thought too...I don't know enough about the neighborhood to say if you'll be comfortable as an African-American, but I guess this answers your question if you're an alcoholic.
Let's put it this way: if you're an African American, you'll be in the minority in Gravesend. I used to live in that neighborhood, and I can tell you that I don't think you'll run into any funny attitudes. But I don't know what to tell you if you happen to be an alcoholic (or an alcoholic African American!)
Gravesend is a sleepy area. It is nice and safe, but nothing happens. No night life, (good) and it is quiet.
The marlboro projects are not that far away. Stores and everything you need is on 86th Street. Not many AA in the area though. But I dont think you will get bad looks at all. There is a mixed population shopping on 86th so I do not think it is a big deal.
Interesting question. I took AA to mean Alcoholics Anonymous rather than African American (I am both). I know that if there are AA meetings in the area, then I am OK. I live in New Hampshire, and there are not a lot of African/Black-Americans in the state, and that's alright, too. Just as I know where to find my AA friends, I also know where to find Black American friends. So everything has worked out fine here in New Hampshire for 21+ years. I know that everything will work out from you, whatever your AA means.
I'm not an alcoholic (don't even remember the last time I drank, actually, haha) but I'm African American. Live wherever you want! For me that means somewhere safe and quiet.
This all goes to show how ridiculous initials and abbreviations can get. Hey, spell things out and avoid the confusion!
