Hello everyone!

I am a graduating architecture major who has just accepted a job with a firm in NYC. Here's the tricky part: they hired me specifically to work on a billion dollar Abu Dhabi project, which means that at an uncertain time between September and January, I will be relocating to their Abu Dhabi office.

I start work in their New York City office on June 16th, so I'm busy with housing searches now. I'm struggling with the best way to confront this situation. I'll be making 40,000 a year while New York City (typical for graduating architect majors) and trying to figure out if I should sublet or rent, knowing full well that if I am stuck in one year contract I'll be in trouble when I leave, and if I sublet I may have to pack up and move a several times...

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Sublet. You are probably not going to have much stuff anyway, given that you are moving to Abu Dhabi eventually. It doesn't make sense to rent and be stuck with a lease.

Also, a sublet usually comes with furniture and kitchen stuff, which you are probably not going to want to buy.

Look for a sublet that says something like "there may be an option to extend."

thanks henna! that's what my instinct was...

on a related note, I have a personal friend who might be willing to sublet his apartment to me (1250 per month plus utilities), but the distance from his apartment to the firm is about 2 miles... (E Manhattan to SW Manhattan)...

might the extra commute be worth it if I'm directly going with someone I can trust, or do I really want to be closer if I'm working 12 hour days?

Miles doesn't matter - what does matter is subway route. If you can give approx locations (intersections) of the two places, or even neighborhoods, that would be helpful. If you don't want to put it on a public forum, then type the addresses into google maps yourself and see what subway stations are near each place, and then post that.

Or go to the MTA.info site and use the trip planner to see how long your commute would be.

I think if you are making only $40K at first and your friend has a place anywhere in Manhattan for $1250, I would jump on it. But I would have to see approx locations to be really sure.

I agree with Henna completely. Miles do not matter as long as there is a convenient subway route. And 2 miles is really not that far in Manhattan. And the sublet situation with someone you know is ideal.

Yep... or use the 'public transit' option on google maps.

2 miles in Manhattan sounds like a great walk to me, especially during the months that you'll be there.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Here's what I get on google maps with public transportation: about half an hour by public tranportation, an hour if I'm just walking, or 17 minutes by bike. I do love biking, is NYC a relatively bike-friendly city?

E 39th St, New York, NY 10016 to 50 Vandam St, New York, NY 10013

Seem alright? Even if I'm leaving work at midnight?

Thanks again!

Its fine. Biking in the city can be brutal. Not a lot of people bike here for transportation reasons, unless you count delivery guys. Subway, cab or walk. I prefer to walk whenever I can, ESPECIALLY when the weather is nice.
