Besides the DMV you should also contact NYC Consumer Affairs Department and NYS Attorney General's Office...they can provide you with some advice. Also...report them to the Better Business Bureau.
I wouldn't trust the lot to look at the car either...
I know it's a bit late, but you should always have an inspection done on a car you're looking to buy by YOUR mechanic. You should also never trust their mechanic bc for all you know it could be their brother/friend/etc.
Also, carfax is pretty useless. It's great for showing MAJOR damage, like a wreck, but shouldn't be used for much more than that.
Did you buy this from a dealer or from a private seller? Unfortunately, either way there is very little you can do. If it's from a dealer, they might work with you for the sake of their reputation. If it's from a private seller, it's buyer beware, and I'd be surprised if they even answer your calls.
Unless the bill of sale stated otherwise, most say the car is sold "as is", and therefore the seller is not responsible in any way. Sorry for your experience. I love cars, but hate the buying/selling process.
Just for the record the NY State Lemon law applies to vehicles with 100,000 miles or less. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to sell you an "extended warranty", they make
commissions off those policies.
I'm going to say that her "clunker" is going to need over $1k in repairs just to get it in safe running condition.
Ask your mechanic to sign an affidavit enumerating the problems with the car, attach it to your complaint. It's well worth $10 notary fees.
