HAHA! This thread is great. I looooove handball. I played stickball, paddleball with my mom's "black beauty" from the 70s, stoopball and handball. I dated a guy from Texas and I asked him if he played handball one day and he was like, "what?"
And then I realized that handball is a total NYC thing.
I haven't played handball since I moved out of New York. I used to play at the handball courts on the boardwalk and W 27th street in Coney Island or the handball court in O'Dwyer park.
I played handball non-stop for 2 years and I even joined my school's team (bad team, btw). I remember those days when people used to talk so many bad things just for the sake of handball. Crazy.
Here is the semi-finals in the 2011 Big Ball nationals at Coney Island. Pee-Wee Castro from Far Rockaway plays Tim Gonzalez from Brooklyn. The best game from the tournament and the sports highlight of the week. Must have been a thousand people in the crowd watching this game.
Too bad this sport does not have a taxpayer funded $2 billion stadium like Derek Jeter from Michigan or David Wright from Virginia does. Handball is real New York and fundamentally grassroots authentic local flavor.

Believe it or not, handball is in some other cities. They would have a wall set up right next to a tennis court separated by a fence. It is most likely not be as popular as it is in nyc tho.
Mmm man.. Handball brings some good memories used to play every single day in middle-high school. Not anymore though heh.. Wonder if it's still active as it once was
