There are currently 62 counties in New York State. Five of these counties are the vestigial counties that make up New York City, leaving 57 real counties. In addition, there were 4 counties that used to be in New York State and are now part of Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont. Thus, New York State had 66 counties (5 + 57 + 4 = 66) between November 1, 1683 when the first 12 counties were organized and today.

Walter just curious and I have read many of your posts - are you writing a book and is your research original renderings of historical gatherings?
I do like the intricacy of your facts sometimes lost in a changing demographic and lost in the scuffle for at least part of a car that was made in Germany or a shoe from China.
I think facts and figures from yesterday and today and your perspective would be interesting.

Thank you for your kind sentiments.
I'm not writing a book. I seem to have an affinity for geography and for the past decade or so, I've been posting replies to queries posted to several NYC and NY area genealogical eMail lists, and over that time I've accumulated a lot of information gleaned from official sources, such as the Division of Local Government Services of the NYS Department of State that provided the list of counties and when they were created.
