Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far--keep them coming! The Adirondacks route sounds the most fun though it might be a stretch for a four day trip. Whitewater rafting also sounds great.

Are you camping or just staying in hotels?
My husband and I went white water rafting on our way up on Black River. Dexter, NY area, I think. It's thirty minutes south of Alex Bay. Go on a warmer day so you can jump out of the raft and float down at the end of the trip---we did that but it was cold.
Wellesley Island is nice and has some nice hiking. Seems like more of a family place for camping but we just visited for the day. Boldt Castle is a nice visit and I like that they pretty much let you walk all over the castle and the grounds.
There are also a lot of places to grab wine slushies.
